Proof that tyres make the ute. GWM has just given Australian media a first drive of its new 3.0-litre turbo-diesel Cannon Alpha — 170kW and a thumping 620Nm from just 1400rpm — and the most telling detail in Drive’s review wasn’t the engine. It was the mud.
The headline numbers
The new 3.0-litre four-cylinder diesel replaces the old 2.4-litre and transforms the big ute: up 35kW and 140Nm, with combined fuel consumption down from 8.9 to 7.3L/100km. Its 620Nm out-muscles the Ford Ranger V6’s 600Nm and leaves the Toyota HiLux’s 150kW/500Nm behind. Two grades are on offer — Lux from $58,990 drive-away and flagship Vanta from $63,990 — with a $2,000 introductory bonus for purchases before 30 October 2026.
There’s substance beyond the engine too: Australian suspension and steering tuning led by ex-Holden engineer Rob Trubiani under GWM’s AT-1 program, validated through local testing; a 945kg payload; 3,500kg braked towing; an integrated trailer brake controller; and a nine-speed torque-converter auto that’s far more refined than the old 2.4-litre’s.
One notable deletion: full-time 4WD is gone from the 3.0-litre variants. All 620Nm goes to the rear wheels on sealed roads, with high- and low-range 4×4 reserved for unsealed surfaces — a move GWM says helps fuel economy, but one that removes the 4A mode rivals offer for wet sealed roads and towing.
The mud-course moment
Here’s the part that matters to anyone selling tyres. During the launch event, the Cannon Alpha Vanta — fitted with Continental highway-terrain tyres — was put through a muddy off-road course. According to Drive, it made it through every obstacle in 4H and 4L “without breaking much of a sweat.”
Think about that. A two-and-a-half-tonne ute on road-biased rubber, handling mud. Now imagine the same vehicle on a proper all-terrain pattern — deeper voids to clear the slop, shoulder lugs biting where the highway tread just spins, sidewalls that don’t flinch at ruts. The review proves the chassis is willing. The right tyre is what turns “surprisingly capable” into “unstoppable.”
GWM clearly agrees: the Cannon Alpha XSR diesel, due later this year, is expected to arrive with all-terrain tyres, a steel bumper with recovery hooks and a snorkel as standard.
The retail opportunity
Every new Cannon Alpha that rolls out of a dealership is a future tyre customer — and many will arrive on highway rubber their owners will quickly outgrow. The conversation at your counter practically writes itself: “Planning to take it further than the beach car park? Let’s talk about what’s under it.”
When a customer walks in talking about their new 4WD, match their ambition with the right tread. An all-terrain or mud-terrain pattern is the difference between getting through and getting towed out.
Grenlander’s 4×4 range includes all-terrain patterns such as the STEADTREK A/T and MAGA A/T TWO, and mud-terrain patterns such as the PREDATOR M/T and DRAK M/T. Check the fitment you need in the tyre size finder.
